Blut Aus Nord's What Once Was rips, pretty different from the rest of their catalog (though shifting styles is what you expect with BAN). To give a rough description it's like a black metal version of Portal with elements of bestial black/death metal (Blasphemy, Teitanblood etc.)
It's limited and vinyl only, so if you're interested I'd pick it up fast.

Looks to be one BAN release I won't own a physical copy of. As much as I love their music I absolutely despise the vinyl format.

Looks to be one BAN release I won't own a physical copy of. As much as I love their music I absolutely despise the vinyl format. While I don't despise vinyl, I don't really have access to it unless I go to my parents' house so there's no point in me getting it really. Recent purchases include: Yen Pox- Blood Music 2-CD Very good Dark-Ambient (supposedly a classic of the genre but not quite focussed enough for that accolade IMO). Propergol- Ground Proximity Warning System A Dark-ambient CD based on air-disasters which 'will make you want to never fly again'. It had it's moments but it was no classic. Ambiguous -Stone Cross - A really good scary dark-ambient nightmare. Now we're talking! Void of Silence - The Grave of Civilisation - Their best release yet and my current favourite album of this year so far. Very very depressive and brings on fear and hopeless feelings. Great! Thought the vocalist was Ronan Keating at first but turns out it's Brooke!

For those who enjoyed Access to Arasaka, my glitchy itch has been scratched by Hecq lately. The atmospheres created on 0000 in particular get me all giddy. 0012

I'll have to track down the 'Nightfalls' album unless you would say another is better.

Black Bile - Cloacal MeditationA very good release of the so called "Torture Doom" subgenre. One 29 minute long track consisting of monotonus slowly developing guitars, equally slow occasionally improvised drumming, topped off with sewer ambience, spoken word sections and pained reverberating shrieking. Reminiscent of the Axis in certain parts. Due to its limited release, 100-CDrs in 2006, it is nearly impossible to find in physical format. However it has been uploaded in its entirety to youtube for those interested in hearing it. Part 1: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNuJKGM0yIQPart 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVDviHJjFDEPart 3: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HAuebDVi_c&feature=relatedNivathe - Enveloped In a Diseased Abyss Another quality release of the same genre. 4 tracks filled with Sludgy Guitars, atonal riffing, torrents of noise, and Insane vocals with the occasional clean guitar section. The Title track can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cbay7Pz0ezs

BAN's Liber I grows on me more and more. Death metal vibe is pretty evident and overally it's an incredible album. First listen was pretty immense for me, because I heard it half-drunk and during the course of the "first" song I was literally frozen to the spot. Awesome I love Cloacal Meditation it's such a dirty album, truly ugly and grotesque stuff. Änd thanks for Nivanthe recommendation, sounds great and it's not very surprising that it is a project of a guy who plays in Senthil. **edit** www.myspace.com/cultoferinyes just found this band on myspace, sounds awesome!

For past half year I'm heavily addicted to Frenchmen post-hardcore mix with black metal called Celeste. Brooke did mention them in his blog. The funniest thing that one of my good friends is fan of them for few years now and haven't mentioned them to me any single time, so thanks go to Brooke. It is fairly new band, but already have 4 releases. Similar at first listen, but as you get used to their sound, you tend to differentiate their works. I haven't heard nothing quite like Celeste. Their works are very heavy, violent and bleak wall of sound. Tastefully discordant and chaotic at times. Painfully intense, but also have some cinematic edge. Here you can check them out: denovali.com/celeste/Nowadays I prefer black metal more as influence rather than style, so this band hits the right spot for me. Could not get anything from new Blut Aus Nord for myself. It just don't click on me. There are some interesting bits, but overall I personally don't find this release to be interesting at all. New Gnaw Their Tongues releases are very enjoyable if I may say so. Compilation The Blotched And The Unwanted and new full length L'Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante, which is to my experience his most orchestra driven work I heard so far. Excellent stuff.

New Swans is ace! My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky is a tremendous comeback of this legendary band. Experimental and psychedelic as ever. This record balances emotional dynamics very well from calm and nervous and vice versus. A bit delirious, yet does quite deep impact. Among the highlights of the year, in my opinion.

Thomas Köner from Germany is a long time standing dark ambient and field recording composer. Usually his low dark droning atmospheres perfectly convey sense of isolation or landscapes of stark wasteland. Any of his work is worth to check out. This man really knows how to immerse listener into the world of subtle darkness. For those who like Lustmord, BassCommunion and the likes, this project might appeal.

The new Blutmond album on Code 666 is awesome, black metal meets industrial meets jazz(!). It all comes together really well though. Do a search for their Myspace and see what you think. It reminded me of Emperor one moment, Red Harvest or Blacklodge the next with some jazz trumpet on a couple of tracks. I know it sounds bad but it really works!

The new Wraiths album, Dust In Our Mouths is really impressing me at the moment. Somewhere between power electronics and dark ambient, it creates an incredibly bleak and sick atmosphere. Samples here.

Wraiths are brilliant. I was gutted that I missed them play Newcastle. When I was collecting field recordings for the first Ophiel album I stayed with Dan (Gaendaal) in Edinburgh and we had a couple of days of wandering around recording things. The song "Nexus Derelicti" is centred on a ten minute recording of me and him making noises in a disused railway tunnel. Lovely guy.
