I ordered a Maeror Tri CD yesterday as well as another ambient group I liked the sound of ('A Fire'- Dead Voices on Air). Which one did you go for? "Emotional Engramm" is probably mine and Brooke's 'productivity' album. Whenever we need to discuss the plans, direction and concepts of Axis in depth we always whack it on because it conduces the perfect atmosphere. It's because we always used it as background music while doing horror roleplay back in t' day when all that is Axis was germinating and taking its first forms, so it plugs us straight back into the right mindset and lots of great horror memories...

That's the one I went for! It's a relief to know it comes highly recommended! Horror roleplay? Dare I ask or is this too unspeakably horrific to articulate especially on t'interweb?

You'll probably have to struggle to hear the influence it had on Axis in some ways, though the keyboards in "One Day You Will Undestand Why" and the techniques in "Forms on the Other Side of Silence" are both heavily indebted.
Pretty much the week we started Minethorn back in '99 Brooke introduced me to the Call of Cthulhu RPG book and we played it quite avidly for about three years, though we only occasionally did Lovecraft inspired scenarios - mostly we came up with all the interior mythologies that would later mould Axis, and which have changed a great deal themselves. It's something I'm eager to get into doing again at some point.

Great interview, enjoyable read (if anything connected to TAOP can be deemed great...) Just ordered the Boris and Merzbow CD, very interested to hear it as I haven't listened to any of the Japanese noise-ists (a new genre prehaps?). Only recently learned about them through Mirai from Sigh collaborating with The Meads Of Asphodel; got some catching up to do methinks... Dom

I briefly had a Butcher's Hook at the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game book (to make it simpler for anyone wishing to post, feel free to use TCOCRGB) and didn't really 'get' the game. However, I ought to say that my look was extremely brief (just a curious flick through) so am I a numpty who should give it more attention? That's the question!
Also, that's 3 or 4 Merzbow albums you gits! Do you want to bankrupt me?

Oh, just wondering, I don't want to sound like a complete arse (I'm happy if you just think I'm a bit of a twat!) but I guess the next Axis release will be after your Masters, Mike. Which is totally understandable, I'm not going to be a whinging bitch, just wondered, that's all. Oh, and also, what made you decide to discontinue your work with Mine[Thorn]?

Actually, despite our new uni commitments and other odds and sods, we're probably freer than we used to be to work on new material. Around the time of PIITSOX, Brooke's job interfered with everything and I was doing uni full-time and it's surprising we got as much done as we did. I suppose it's not inconceivable that there might be an Axis release of sorts in 2006 but as ever there's no point laying any bets because the material always comes in its own time.
Minethorn, the pre-Axis band and Mine[thorn], the present incarnation, are only related in name, really. Back in autumn 2001 I was working on songs for a third Minethorn demo, and was getting frustrated by it. I also started coming up with these ugly chord sequences that didn't seem to fit in with the Minethorn of the time, so I wrote the music for "Corridors" to let off steam. It became very quickly apparent that I got far more out of it than I did with Minethorn and saw far more of a future for it, and once Brooke joined Axis as well in Jan '02 and felt the same potential in it, original Minethorn just popped out of existence. Current Mine[thorn] is a separate thing that Brooke started in Jan '03, with a totally different musical agenda, but he wanted to keep the name alive. My only involvement in it has been programming a bit of drums here and there for the earliest demo recordings in the first couple of months, and session guitar for one gig (Black Eclipse '03).

Thanks for clearing that up. There are plenty of other bands releasing albums (apparently) soon which ought to keep me amused anyway (just when will DHG finish their new one?!)

Those are something I wait with great anticipation and expectations. I checked Maeror Tri. Now I know from Germany not only Tangerine Dream or Inade. Those guys really impressive. I could recommend to try out swedish Kammarheit. Perhaps one of the best dark ambient projects of all time.

Ahhh.... Kammarheit is truly terrific... as well, I would highly reccomend Sephiroth, absolutely amazing dark-ambient artist. Well, continuing on the reccomendations, if you happen to like Dark Neo-Folk(ish) stuff... I would reccomend Tenhi and October Falls, both amazing bands, the latter with some connection with the Black Metal "scene".
Erm, and back on topic... I did write a (ass-kissing, but I believe well deserved) review for "Physical Illucinations...." for the Lunar Hypnosis webzine. (http://cp05.ionhosting.com/~joelh/) Not sure if the server's up as of this moment though.

Ahhh.... Kammarheit is truly terrific... Perhaps not as terrific as very meditating. Gonna see it tomorrow together with Northaunt and Svartsinn. Absolute dark ambient night...

How could I forget Bestia Centauri Perhaps the most "lovecraftian sounding" project I've ever heard. Something so dizzy and absolutely otherworldly. Sheer paranormalism. And it is not dark ambient. This is somekind electro acoustic experimental soundscapes. Highest recommendations from my side.

I've got the most recent Sephiroth release and I like it, it's quite tribal, n'est pas? Getting back on topic, I found a new interview posted online questionning Mike and Brooke with a French website or magazine, you can find it here: www.obskure.com/fr/inter_model.php?num_inter=490I may as well try to make use of a French degree even though my standard has dropped considerably since coming back to this Hell-hole country and finishing uni, the intro goes something like: 'Interview with Mike and Brooke from The Axis of Perdition, creators of a 'devastated musical crossroads' of horrific ambient and the most black indusrial metal. A Psychic Maelstrom of which nobody emerges the same, not least its makers ....' Feel free to correct me, I couldn't be bothered to trawl through my books for the French dictionnary.

I've just read through this old thread for the hell of it and thought I'd post an update. I've only just heard that Amazon can't get hold of 'Emotional Engramm' by Maeror Tri after trying since whenever the post above was. However, I've ordered 'Myein' from the States and I've received 'The Beauty of Sadness' from Cold Spring which is being received very well. Incidentally, the only place elsewhere I can Find 'EE' is gemm.com where it costs over $100! And Gruntsplatter, I've posted about on the recommendations thread (Share and Unlearn). They're very good and I've bought 4 of their albums now. 'The Aberrant Laboratory' is still my favourite for aural horror, though.
